Why was the Integrated Warfighter System developed?

The integrated Warfighter System is based on the Future Force Warrior program in development by the US Military. The U.S. Military completely re-imagined the way we look at our combat forces. By thinking of the individual soldier as a system, and leveraging advanced technologies to improve that system, we can create a fighting force that, man by man, is more responsive, more survivable, and more lethal than any existing force. You as the player will now have the opportunity to take control of the most advanced military technology in unique on and offline battle situations pushing your gameplay experience to new heights.

What are the Integrated Warfighter System’s capabilities?

All of the IWS components are extremely lightweight, watertight, flexible, and comfortable. Molded closely to the soldier’s form for optimum mobility and responsiveness, this armor can easily withstand fragmentation from 9mm weapons.

With the Integrated Halo® Helmet Electronics Suite with modular attachments the soldier also has:
- Fused thermal sensor for enhanced vision
- Cross Com High-Resolution 'see-through' HMD
- ANR Headphones with Bone Conduction Microphones for integrated COMs
- High Definition digital camera
- L1/L2 Soldier Radio and GPS antennas
- 3D Inertial Sensor for dead-reckoning

This may sound as though you are virtually a machine, but remember when you have bullets screaming by you, snipers positioned everywhere and tanks hunting your team down, you will still need to survive!

How will the IWS improve the game play experience?

In terms of gameplay, this translates to a more extensive range of movements such as climbing over objects and the ability to take cover behind vehicles, walls and trees. The other major change in terms of gameplay will be via the CROSS-COM HUD which I will explain later.

Tell us about this new 'CROSS-COM system?

The “CROSS-COM” communication device is the biggest new feature for the Ghosts. This device is powered by satellite technology and gives the ghosts full visibility and command of the battlefield. It will increase the player’s vision of the battlefield in various ways, the player will be able to control unmanned drones and see further and behind buildings via the “CROSS-COM” window, also he will be able to communicate with other allied forces and control Apache Air Strikes. This is based on real military technology and increases the soldiers “situational awareness” on the battlefield.

What is the Narcom?

The Narcom is actually an extension of the CROSS-COM device which is also integrated into the HUD. The CROSS-COM Window on the left hand side allows the player to see what his interactive team-mates and support troops are doing such as fellow ghosts, apache helicopters and unmanned air support. The Narcom is an extension of that system and gives the player additional Intel on hostiles and friendlies. It is also used to talk the player through the story, giving newsflashes from TV news channels and from other support forces.

What are the newsflashes?

WNM is news channel created by Ubisoft. In GRAW we use it to keep the player up to date as events unfold, but simply via the Narcom, so the player is continually on the battlefield and still has the story unfolding in front of him keeping the intensity of battle.

Did you use real Journalists?

For Jen Barkley our News reporter on the ground the script writer was inspired by a friend of his, Genevieve Barker who is an award winning journalist for the last 10 years, Genevieve Barker, has anchored, reported and produced for NBC affiliate television as well as several other news media outlets. Most recently she hosted and served as executive producer of "Carolina in the Morning," the number-one ranked morning show in the market for over five years. She has appeared nationally on several programs and films including NBC's Dateline as well as the Warner Brother's hit series, "Dawson's Creek" and USA Network's "The Perfect Crime." Barker is also a seasoned hurricane journalist. She's weathered over four major storms: Fran, Bonnie, Bertha and Floyd with natural disaster special reports from the field and the anchor desk making her perfect for a putsch breaking out in one of the largest cities in the world even if this time it is only in a video game!

Do you use other celebrities?

To fans of GR, the in-game characters themselves are stars in there own right, so we try to keep the most popular characters throughout the series. We also use many of the same voices that have appeared in Ghost Recon games and try to create a “bond” or relationship between the player and his team.
